I updated to kernel 2.6.20-16.29 and now it boots in a normal timeframe
without having to add the irqpoll option.


However, the led on the tower that indicates disk accesses flashes steadily. 
Could it be related to the cdrom issue? Indeed, though the cdrom icon does not 
appear anymore on the desktop, the 2 cd-drives are listed next to the hdd 
volumes in the sidepane of the nautilus window.
