The Tecra R840 affected by bug #962142 has an ATI graphics card and uses the proprietary fglrx module, whereas James', who opened this bug here, and mine have Intel processor graphics, which might also make at least partly the difference between suspend failure and success. Of course that's just a guess. Indeed the error description in bug #962142 is very similar to what I could notice when my machine locked up on suspend.
As you predicted with your new version from comment #15 suspend and resume still works and there is no noticeable difference against the version before from comment #12.
