It should noted that if anywhere in the CUPS workflow uses the Ghostscript ps2write device, CIDFonts will not "survive" that conversion.
CIDFonts are a Postscript level 3 feature, so ps2write has to "flatten" them to some other font format, and in doing so, will lose the original "encoding" (there is no Postscript equivalent to a PDF ToUnicode CMap to preserve non-standard encodings). Once that information is lost, converting to PDF cannot bring it back. (if it uses the pswrite device, then all fonts will disappear..... but it hasn't used that in a while).
