I have the same issue on a DELL XPS 15 L502X. When I plug external speakers or headphones, there's no sound. Modifying the Alsa config results in problems so the present workaround for me is this one:
- Just right after I plug the external speakers, I hit (Mute then Unmute) : This enables sound back.
