Try to re-start the desktop managerby pressing <ctrl> + <alt> + <backspace>
Or in terminal type sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart
Or killall gnome-panel

These problems are probably due to Beryl as it seems a bit hard on systems try
also to re-start Beryl manager right click Beryl icon for options and then
enable Beryl in select Beryl manager option.
I had these problems in Ubuntu 7.04 and Sabayon linux so I installed Mepis 6.5
and that seemed fine till I got the same problems so now I am back to Sabayon
linux and I don't mess too much playing with settings leave well alone!
I am now a great fan of Sabayon linux as everything is installed by default
plus it has two games installed and the desktop looks great!
On my removable HD's I also have dual boot XP and Ubuntu 6.10. this is a great
way to check out distros having removable HD's.
PCLinuxOS will also be another super distro which comes out 24th May.
With regard to re-sizing windows with Beryl running it can take some time for
the window to move and if you widen the window the min and max buttons
re-appear.
I hope that some of these help someone.
