Thanks Seth. Did logout but instead of taking me back to the login screen, the computer just turned the monitor off! It was still on as the hard drive was responding to my keyboard input. Couldn't get anywhere so the magic ctrl+alt+del worked successfully in doing a shutdown.
Rebooted, went straight into Ctrl+Alt+F2 (F1 didn't work either this time, it just hung on the cursor) did the rest and have attached the output file.
