Could you provide the source for "backlight" instead ?
i won't run an unknown binary !

There are two ways to get BIOS mode on latest imac :
* boot from CD, temporary, but simplest. You can boot from supergrub2 CD then 
boot your hd partition, for example.
  Or boot from ubuntu 11.04 live cd... is that what you tried ? it worked well 
for me.
* bless -legacy from osx, that is, the bootcamp method, but i never tried that.

Also note that fglrx 11.4 is working without needing the "vbios load patch" in 
EFI mode,
but aticonfig is not, so one has to provide the xorg.conf manually.
See http://wiki.debian.org/ATIProprietary for a simple yet working example).
No specific kernel boot parameters are needed (installing fglrx package 
blacklists radeon module)
