Are you sure your printer is able to do PostScript? Please check the manual.
You have set up your printer using the Generic PostScript driver, this is 
generally not a good idea.
If your printer is able to do PostScript you should use the PPD that is 
included with your printer on the CD-ROM that came with it.
According to http://openprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Dell-1700 your 
printer should work with the Generic PCL6 driver, this user wasn't able to get 
his printer working with the PostScript driver.
Please let us know which of the drivers works best so we can add the Dell 1700 
in future version of foomatic-db and Ubuntu.
