I guess I'm not "getting it". Would putting input focus in the box on F8 interfere with the user doing something else? What? I've tried a few things (e.g. ctrl-5, shift-ctrl-X) and they still function as expected even when the box has focus. The only place I can see it would be an issue is if you were in the middle of renaming an event when the urge struck you to hit F8 - if you were used to how Shotwell works you wouldn't expect focus to move from the event name to the search box.
