Thanks very much -- did an apt-get install xine-ui, apt got that as well
as an updated libxine module.  I already had libdvdread, libdvdnav and
libdvdcss.  Once xine-ui was loaded DVDs load normally and offer full
menu functionality through Totem.
Many thanks for your help -- this is not a bug proper and can be closed
now.  I'll see if I can pass on this bit of wisdom to others.
