I understand and appreciate your efforts to get to the cause of the
update error, but from my point of view, would it be simpler to get a
fresh copy of the schema file and re-install the update-manager. If
package installs now work without error then maybe the fault was a
corrupted schema file whose cause can't now be determined ?
