Update: Canonical support suggests fresh install of 10.04 or upgrade to 10.10. Both for me currently is a no-op.
Further information about the system as from the support case: On my machines (with different hardware, but common NFS /home on a separate NAS device) Kubuntu 10.04 was installed "from scratch" using a CD download after April 30, 2010. All (and only regular) updates have been applied. Addressbooks were accessible through kaddressbook (in kontact) until an unknown date.
