Time for a celebration! This problem appears to be fixed in the latest version from the gwibber- daily PPA (2.31.4~bzr783-0ubuntu1~daily1). Thank you very much.
For the first time since I started to use Gwibber, clicking on the "Send with:"-Icons actually leads to a visible change of the icons. I have verified that sending tweets or dents now works as intended with two (1x Twitter, 1x identi.ca) and three (2x Twitter, 1x identi.ca) accounts.
