While the above packages did provide me with a stable WiFi connection, I
noticed that hotplug was not being supported and if the PCMCIA card was
not present at startup or was ejected during a session and then re-
inserted it would not be recognised and the interface was lost. So
hotplug was not being supported. I did:

sudo apt-get install linux-wlan-ng

and restarted the system. Now I have hotplug on the PCMCIA card too.
