It turned out data cds with k3b didn't work for me either.  I disabled
the on th fly option.  Everything seemed to work and said it was
successful, but I can't read the disc.  The disc is not exactly blank
anymore just messed up.  I tested it originally by making an audio cd.
Adding  cdrskin in place of cdrecord just caused k3b to burn audio cds
with cdrdao instead of cdrskin, which apparently works fine for me.  I
should have been more observant.  Brasero works for me also.
