Dasdaa is right on the money - I have wasted a significant amount of time figuring out the problem, and then resolving it, so that software that installs out of the box on other distros works on Ubuntu.
I'm a new Ubuntu user - I switched to it because I need a linux distribution that makes it easy for me to focus on my work, and not on the details of my OS.
