I am having a similar (the same?) problem with a WD My Book drive connected to a Mac mini via Firewire 800 in Kubuntu Lucid (fully updated as of 18.03.2010). Normally, the drive simply hangs and has to be disconnected from the computer and the power supply to restore operation (when booting to OS X). Dmesg follows:
