In karmic, it is apparently possible to set this value: xrandr --output LVDS1 --set "scaling mode" "Full aspect" The changed value appears in the output of xrandr --prop. Unfortunately this has no effect on the horrible distorted appearance of the resulting modes; the effect is still that of "Fullscreen". (Why is full aspect not the default anyway?)
