Similar error:

usern...@inspiredx:~$ ls -la /usr/bin/awk && ls -la /etc/alternatives/awk

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 2009-12-06 21:47 /etc/alternatives/awk -> 
/usr/bin/gawk
usern...@inspiredx:~$ ls -al /usr/bin/gawk
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 334264 2009-08-24 17:33 /usr/bin/gawk
 

The update-initramfs.txt is empty.  The system err'd out.

 ls -al up*
-rwxrwx--- 1 username username 0 2009-12-12 21:19 update-initramfs.txt
