@Dominik: If you have a recommended distro that is known to work well on
an ASUS netbook, I can certainly try it. All the ones I have tried on it
so far (other than its stock Xandros) have been Ubuntu-based. (I started
with the one now called Easy-Peasy, and also Eeebuntu, and maybe one
other I'm not remembering.) It has been a long time since I've installed
stock Debian but it doesn't scare me to try it, for example.

I'm also reminded that the filesystem corruption seems to be worst when
I accept the Ubuntu partitioner defaults (fill my 32gig drive with root
and swap). I don't know how/why that matters but in this case I suspect
that if I again decrease the size of the root partition a bit, I would
be able to get the installation to complete with ext3. I don't know if
it's worth trying ext2 or Reiser.

I suppose I could also remove the upgraded drive and reinstall the
original stock ASUS 4gig flash SSD drive and test it. I wouldn't mind so
much if I destroy IT in the name of science. ;-)
