I just completed a fresh install using Ubuntu Karmic 9.10 NBR release
version, except I chose to format the root partition as ext3 instead of
ext4.  On reboot, I get the rescue:grub> prompt.

I imagine the filesystem is as hosed as before, but I'll leave it a
couple of days in case someone wants to suggest some things to look at.
