I ran lshal --monitor to see whether that would produce anything useful.
It gave no output except for "Start monitoring devicelist" and a line of
hyphens, until the problem occurred,at which point it gave:

14:27:00.381: usb_device_46d_c505_noserial_if1_logicaldev_input condition
ButtonPressed = mail
14:27:01.955: usb_device_46d_c505_noserial_if1_logicaldev_input condition
ButtonPressed = mail
14:27:02.956: usb_device_46d_c505_noserial_if1_logicaldev_input condition
ButtonPressed = mail
14:27:04.547: usb_device_46d_c505_noserial_if1_logicaldev_input condition
ButtonPressed = mail
14:27:06.345: usb_device_46d_c505_noserial_if1_logicaldev_input condition
ButtonPressed = mail

The mail button wasn't pressed.
