more info I reinstalled the original master back in the box and re jumpered the slave back to slave , it will not boot as slave , GRUB loadingReadError again before it even gets to the menu , mounted the drive from another install and edited /boot/grub/grub.cfg changing the lines set root=hd0,1 to set root=hd1,1 to reflect that the drive number would have incremented up by 1 with the original master present . same result .
