I disconnected the IDE master and rejumpered the slave as master . installed
jaunty to that drive with legacy grub and it boots and runs normal . reformated
the drive and installed lucid daily live (amd64 desktop) of nov 28 . fails to
boot error mesage is "error: you need to load the kernel first " returning to
the menu and using e to edit and setting "set quiet=0 " then ctrl+x to boot I
get
booting a command list
  [Linux-bzImage, setup=0x3400, size=0x3d9c20]
error: couldn't read file
I tried this install twice using gparted to delete the partitions and
reformating the drive, and then during install allowing the installer also to
format the partitions , same result each time .
I then used the first lucid livecd from nov 16 . this had failed in the same
way when the drive was set as slave with the original master present . this
time it suceeded and boots noramly . also note that installs to SATA drives on
the same box suceeded everytime once with kubuntu 10.04 and once on a different
SATA with the lucid livecd of nov 16. hope this helps in sorting out the
problem . If I can run further tests to help please ask .
