Public bug reported: Ubuntu 9.10 was booted up without installing it, but it should not make a difference for this bug.
I've started playing a 720p James Bond .mkv movie from the HDD, and it went smoothly, until i wondered about the CPU load and started the "system monitor" from the system -> administratino menu. While sys. mon. was starting, there was a short (~0.5s) system-wide pause and as soon as system resumed functioning, movie playback started being choppy. CPU loads were normal, all below 50%. (CPU is Core 2 Quad 2.66Ghz, GeForce 8800 GTX, open source NV driver). This happens in 5 out 6 attempts to reproduce. I've tried the folowing workarounds, each from the moment it started to being choppy: * closing the system monitor - did NOT help * pressed pause and resume - did NOT help, made the choppyness even worse * closing the system mon., closing and starting totem player again - issue gone, playback smooth * closing and starting gstreamer while sys. mon. was running - issue gone, playback smooth >From what i can tell, this seems to be an issue with totem player / gstreamer not being able to recover gracefully after frames have been lost due to a system stall, since pausing and unpausing made things even worse. If you (totem developer) need help with testing a patch, providing more info and helping to fix this bug, i'm available via e-mail. ps. .mkv movie in case was "Quantum.of.Solace.2008.720p.BluRay.DTS.x264-DON.mkv" ProblemType: Bug Architecture: amd64 Date: Sun Nov 22 03:27:41 2009 DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.10 ExecutablePath: /usr/bin/totem LiveMediaBuild: Ubuntu 9.10 "Karmic Koala" - Release amd64 (20091027.1) Package: libgstreamer0.10-0 0.10.25-2 ProcEnviron: LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.31-14.48-generic SourcePackage: gstreamer0.10 Uname: Linux 2.6.31-14-generic x86_64 ** Affects: gstreamer0.10 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug -- totem playback starts being choppy after "system monitor" has been started while watching a movie https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/486543 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
