I also have this problem -- exact symptoms and observations as above. It
is a new computer, with a fresh new 9.10 installation (dual boots with
Win 7). To assist, here's the system specs:

- GIGABYTE GA-MA770T-UD3P AM3 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard
- AMD Phenom II X3 705e 2.5GHz Socket AM3 65W Triple-Core
- ZOTAC ZT-95TEK2P-FSL GeForce 9500 GT 1GB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI Express 2.0 x16
- 4 GB DDR3 RAM
- Intel X25-M Mainstream 2.5" 80GB SATA II MLC SSD (gen2)
- 2 DVD drives

I have the screen saver set to blank the screen after 15 minutes and
have the power settings set to turn off the screen after 30 minutes.
Obviously, there is no hard drive spin-down in mine case as I have an
SSD, so that might be something that can be ruled out at least. I have
no idea what would be causing this.

I also have to power down to recover, which I hate having to do. If
there is some other known recovery method, that would be nice to know.
In the mean time, I am going to disable the power saving options as my
"solution".
