I want to follow up again adding that I am using 64-bit Ubuntu 9.10 Also, based on this post: http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1307653.html I am suspecting the problem is with 185 driver. Maybe. If so, I guess it's an nVidia issue, but it may need to be confirmed.
Also, if anyone does get this "black screen of death" try doing a ctrl- alt-f1.
