Merged the latest Debian changes and they do seem to fix the problem. I am relatively new at the PPA thing, but I did upload a karmic package to my PPA (https://launchpad.net/~aperomsik/+archive/aap-ppa/+packages) in case it will help someone. Although the package was built against karmic I installed it on my apt-cacher server which is still running jaunty and it seems to work fine. It's rather refreshing to be able to hit the Check button in update-manager and not get error messages.
