Doris, when you drag and drop a folder to the external drive, everything inside that folder will be copied exactly as it was on your computer. This will also leave your original versions completely unaffected. I am more concerned about how much space you need, so you may want to see how much space the folders take up. You can right-click a folder, and choose "Properties", and a description of the folder will come up, including how much space its contents are taking up. Remember, 1GB is about equal to 1000 MB.
I'll also look into the update/upgrade issue.
