I did a complete reinstall of karmic with the official final version, and was disappointed that the microphone with skype still did not work. And I swear to the ubuntu logo that it didn't! However, today I tried skype - updates NOT done since last use - and the microphone works.
If it fails tomorrow, I'll speak up again, but sofar my problem is solved. Under skype->options->sound devices it shows PulseAudio server in use for microphone/speakers/ringing.
