Hum, this has been very tricky to sort out.
 
* First, I had to install the backport modules.

* Second, in order to make my microphone work (record with audacity), I
had to raise the "digital" channel in the mixer, that was at the bottom
level. Do not raise it up to the top, though. After raising the
"digital" channel, I was able to record in audacity (but only in one
side - right one if I remember correctly -, although I have all the
channels in the mixer completely symmetric).

* Finally, to make skype record, I had to go to Options -> Sound Devices
and set the microphone to the channel (hw:0.0) (if this does not work,
you can try the other "hw", depending on which microphone you are
using).

PS: I am running an amd64 system.
