I would love to help but, alas, I have no idea where to begin. Though I may be an intermediate C/C++ programmer, without some expert guidance I'm afraid I am lost. Best I can do is point out that this 'workaround' does break an accessibility feature. And I know that Canonical is proud of the accessibility features of their distribution.
