Using "speaker-test -Dplug:surround51 -c6", only the front-left and front-right produces a sound. There are only 3 speakers on a MacBook 4,1, so this looks like a much better test. So, the LFE does seem to work using gamix, but definitely does not with "speaker-test -Dplug:surround51 -c6".
