I am using a MacBook 4,1 (aka MacBook Early 2008?). The daemon.conf
suggestions don't have any effect. Also, there is only the Master
slider in alsamixer output. The "speaker-test -c6" gives six channels,
with front and rear, left and right, and center checking out OK (using
the left and right speakers in different combos and volumes). However,
it does not activate the LFE speaker under the keyboard (or so I have
heard that's where it is).

However, gamix fixes the problem if the LFE button is toggled off and
on. This seems to work fine, at least for a while. At some point, the
audio becomes unstable, which may have been a problem with messing
around with daemon.conf. Now that it is set to default, I can report
later if instability arises again. For now, gamix appears to fix the
LFE. I don't know why.
