I think that there are at least two ways to do it. I went into "mouse"
in "system"=>"preferences", and on the "touchpad" tab there is a
checkbox labelled "enable touchpad", which I unchecked. I know it's
difficult to use the menus without left-click, but you can do it with a
combination of tab, alt and space. 

I think you can also go into the bios on startup. I don't know if you
can still do it on the T61, but if you press F1 quickly after startup on
the T30, you can disable the touchpad there.
