Browsing upstream Bugzilla, I learned that new appointments are created
by default to the currently selected calendar, or if no calendar is
selected, to the default one (GNOME bug #303296). After testing, I can
confirm this is the case. Concequently, the current behavior not erratic
as such, but it is a little unituitive especially when the calendar view
is not visible -- a common use case: you're reading email and need to
add an appointment based on the email you're looking at. Upstream seems
to consider this a bug instead of enhancement.
