I believe that these problems involving CD drive ejection are drive brand specific. Is the FIRMWARE (not to be confused with driver) on your CD device on the latest version available ?
I just installed the latest daily build 10-12-2009 (alternate) of Karmic on an older machine of mine and the CD ejection functions fine.
