Additional information: I have noticed that after this problem occurs, my laptop does not suspend correctly when closing the lid. In normal circumstances suspend works correctly, this is only after I have lost GSM connectivity. I get a kernel OOPs and the attached is the detail from syslog showing a kernel issue with usbserial disconnect.
