** Description changed: After an upgrade last night I do not get any graphical user interface (gdm) anymore. Instead, ubuntu stucks in the terminal mode and flickers. It seems that something is written to the screen (I just can see aa and after I get again the login prompt). Due to this "flickering" I am not able to login, as it takes the key storkes only when the login prompt is available. If I start in recovery mode, I do not have this "flickering" effect. I am able to login. If I try to start gdm with -
sudo gdm
+ sudo gdm I get -
gdm-binary[4322]: WARNING: Unable to find users: no seat-id found gdm-binary[4322]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted x.xxx seconds gdm-binary[4322]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted x.xxx seconds .... - gdm-binary[4322]: WARNING: GdmDisplayFactory_ ,axi,u, nimber of X display failures reached: check X server log for errors. -
+ gdm-binary[4322]: WARNING: GdmDisplayFactory: maximum number of X display failures reached: check X server log for errors. I've attached the corresponding log files. Information: Linux 2.6.31-11-generic #36-Ubuntu SMP Fir Sep 25 06:37:23 UTC 2009 x86_64 xorg-server 2:1.6.3-1ubuntu7
