Addition to #6: I was also trying different terminals (tty1 to tty5), which ends up somehow in stopping flickering (I can't reproduce yet). However, when switching back wit Ctrl+Alt+F7, flickering starts again. Switching back to tty1 I can see at least the message "Window manager error: Unable to open X display".
