I have a similar issue.. From login screen I can book to xterm, but not to gnome. If I try gnome, the system returns to the login screen. It is recognizing my password, and it will log me into an xterm window. amd turion, 4 GB ram, ATI Radeon Mobility, atheros wirless, but does the same if I have a wired connection... I have run apt-get update to make sure I have the most current patches, but still not working.. Alpha 4 was no problem.
