No desktop after logging in.

All was fine with Karmic Alpha 4 until after a regular update (beginning
of September, so before the release the Alpha 5) I was not able to reach
my desktop any more. After logging in the screen went black for a few
seconds (as usual) but instead of my desktop, the login screen appeared
again. I've tried Alpha 5 now but the same happens. I can only use Alpha
4 with no updates.

I'm using a Sony Vaio VGN-SR29VN (i could repeat the same problem on
another laptop of exactly this same type)
