Update: rebooted without "quiet" to get more output. System hung at boot with usplash after displaying "starting the windbind daemon winbind" No error messages. HDD LED is on. Not responding to ctrl+alt+del or the power button.
I do not think this is related to winbind and I am sure this is not the only point where usplash hangs. Also, for maximum effect, I was looking at a frozen boot splash during my last post, rebooted using the power button (single press), edited the kernel parameters in grub, and booted into yet another frozen boot splash.
