Related bug?

I have frequent boot failures related to usplash.
Boot hangs at apparently various stages and fails permanently about 50% of the
time.
(I judge this by the varied amount of progress bar displayed at halt. There is
no way to get more meaninful output from the system.)
It fails absolutely every time fsck runs at boot.

In some cases the system is still responsive to ctrl+alt+del or being shut down
by a single press of the power button (triggers a software initialized
shutdown) but in most cases not.
Occasionally the HDD LED is on, not blinking--just on, when the system halts,
especially if it halts during fsck (obviously).

If I change the "splash" flag to "nosplash" in grub, the system boots
without any trouble of any kind for every attempt.

Anyone know any way I could find out WHY usplash is hanging?
