This work with my inspiron 1525 with 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 02) on Ubuntu 9.04 64bit
What I've done: 1) remove all pulse audio components: sudo apt-get --purge remove pulseaudio* libpulse* --yes 2) add the line: options snd-hda-intel model=dell-bios to the file "/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf" 3) rebooted the system 4) in the gnome volume control set the Digital Input Source to "Analog inputs" and select the first "Input Source" field to "Front Mic" and check "Digital" and "Record" volume (ex: 100%) Now your external mic will work!
