The described patch "xserver-no-backfill" works flawlessly for me on
- Ubuntu 9.04 / 64 Bit - Lenovo T500 with a Mobility Radeon HD 3650 - Catalyst 9.6 I experienced no performance loss in normal office work (not having tried any "serious" 3D stuff though).
