Have you tried "Compiz Fusion Icon" ? I used to have a blinking screen problem in 8.10 while playing video under compiz, and I switched to metacity when I needed to play a video using "Fusion Icon". In addition to my previous post: In my case, the patch just fixed the slow response of Maximising operation. But it did nothing to improve the memory consuming problem, Xorg is still eating that much memory as before. If my system is up for 9 hours, Xorg could eat 2G of memory (Virt + Res).
