Also happens on my Lenovo SL300 with an nVidia 9300M. The way it happens for me, though, is that the screen starts at a normal brightness when it boots and stays that way through GRUB, but becomes dark early in the linux boot process, specifically when it says "loading hardware drivers". I've tried booting without usplash, and it does the same thing.
