No this is not the case. In most cases, the problem manifests itself within 30 seconds of connecting to the remote PC. ie. It might freeze on the logon screen or halfway after I opened my 1st app. Please note that it is not the remote XP box that is freezing it is the local instance of remote desktop viewer.
I just tested it again. Clean boot of Ubuntu, started Firefox, connected VPN, Ran remote desktop for 3:34 without hiccups.
