Ekiga video using the two free codecs wasn't terribly impressive.  I
tried these codecs between two Ubuntu Jaunty laptops and none worked too
well.  H264 had terrible artifacts where the picture would update only
partially each frame so my face turned into a big weird looking mess.
H264-1998 seemed to crash the receiving end, while h263 didn't work well
(it would either not display anything or show a static image with green
lines through it).  M4v worked okay, but not noticeably better than
h261.  I did these tests over a LAN with one side wired and one
wireless, with max upload set to 512kbps and the slider towards picture
quality rather than framerate.  I was hoping for h264 to blow me away
and work as well as Skype does, but I haven't been able to get good
results...
